MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

 

DEFINITION

Performs skilled maintenance/repair work in two or more of the recognized building and mechanical trades (carpentry, electrical, heating and air conditioning, machinist, machine repair, masonry, painting, pipe fitting, plumbing, refrigeration and welding); performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Repairs/installs standard electrical components and cleans, repairs and replaces motors, lighting units, switches and electrical lines; adjusts/repairs elevator components and troubleshoots fire alarm systems.

Welds (acetylene/arc) water and steam pipes, kettles and tables; solders refrigeration piping.

Does plumbing and steam fitting work on water/steam steam lines, stools and bathtubs; repairs/replaces sewer lines and heating plant components; cuts, threads and insulates pipes.

Builds/makes cabinets, booths, shelving, doors, windows, screens and signs; refinishes furniture and venetian blinds.

Mixes paint, sets up work areas and does maintenance/decorative painting; cleans and maintains spray painting equipment.

Overhauls air compressors, laundry presses and dishwashers and adjusts, repairs and replaces automotive parts.

Does general masonry work, tuck points and rebuilds concrete walks and steps.

Instructs helpers in trades work.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment used in building and mechanical maintenance work.

Knowledge of the hazards present and safety precautions necessary in building and mechanical maintenance work.

Ability to perform skilled trades work and to assist others on more difficult assignments.

Ability to understand and follow oral/written instructions, including layouts and prints required in trades work.

Ability to provide instruction to trades helpers.

Ability to use and care for tools/equipment used in building and mechanical maintenance work.

Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Exhibits honesty and integrity.  Refrains from theft-related, dishonest or unethical behavior.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Experience equal to three years of full-time work in two or more of the recognized building and mechanical trades (carpentry, electrical, heating and air conditioning, machinist, machine repair, masonry, painting, pipe fitting, plumbing, refrigeration and welding);

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year or thirty semester hours of accredited post high school course work in a building or mechanical trades program at a recognized trades school for each year of the required experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper.

 

NOTE

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required Commercial Drivers License and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.

 

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION

For designated positions the appointing authority, with Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise prior approval, may request those applicants possessing a minimum of twelve semester hours of education, six months of experience, or a combination of both, or a specific certificate, license, or endorsement in the following areas:

765       welding
